Monster Stork by BBDO: Best Commercial of the Year

February 21st, 2008 · 1055 Comments

I watched this commercial at work - with the sound off - in a tiny corner of my monitor overlapping with excel spreadsheets, outlook drafts all the while on a conference call.

Within the duration of this commercial all my attention shifted to it - its beautifully imagined, inspiring and downright depressing for all those watching at work.

Amazing patience was taken with this commercial, a credit to BBDO who created a short film as opposed to ad fluff. This is something I’d be excited to watch on TV.

I wonder if the stork would be upset with me if he saw what I was doing. Too bad I don’t even have a damn window to see him. Maybe he’s hovering outside of one of the conference rooms.

Gatorade G2 Revealed: Derek Jeter + Dwayne Wade

 Derek Jeter Baseball God

those weird ads with lou reed’s take a walk on the wild side playing softly in the background have been revealed to be Derek Jeter and Dwayne Wade - the commercials show them transforming the world around them as they travel through. (Jeter’s in NY as his fans are congratulating him… for what? that… I don’t know..)

ingenious advertising. great tag line “the next game begins when the last one ends”

even the walking man symbol in the street lamp changes! I love an ad that pays attention to the nuances. Go Element 79 Partners Chicago!! A for the campaign.

This $7 Billion Dollar Loser needs a Facebook poke.

How to stop being Facebook friends with that guy who lost $7 billion

Ah simple instructions for jumping out of that sinking ship of a social circle with a guy who lost $7 billion. Poor guy only had 11 friends to begin with and now 7 of them are gone.

When you really think about it, losing that amount of money is as impressive as making it. How does someone do that? and it might be more.

NHL Can’t Buy Viewers or Can They?

January 29th, 2008 · 195 Comments

The NHL continues to sell out games and draw people into the arenas on game night, yet they continue to lose viewers on television. One might ask how they continue to bring in so many people to the games.

After sub-par ratings in last year’s NHL finals on NBC, I thought the league was doomed. But, they have partnered with Google Video and YouTube to offer video of their games.

On YouTube the NHL has created their own channel where you can access daily updates from around the league including game recaps like this one from the allstar game.

As with YouTube you can access game footage on Google videos, actuall the entire game. They have licensed a number old game footage to Google allowing people to view them in their entirety.

The NBA has followed suit after their tv ratings have continued to drop over the last few seasons. Is this the future of sports marketing? I hope so, the ability to watch the sports I like whenever I want and not when ESPN tells me to is a great thing. I guess that goes towards the me first society I have been raised in, but I like it.

Budweiser Lager Lessons, Rob Riggle, Recipe For Pretentious Bull

January 29th, 2008 · 1065 Comments

Pretentious Bud Lessons Moron

As I watched the all too serious in tone Budweiser Lager Lessons about great beer and the brewing process, I couldn’t wait for a slapstick moment of humor. I imagined this moron, wearing a blazer over a turtleneck sweater, would get hit by a truck (I don’t know why but I so often want to see these ‘brand ambassadors’ in commercials get horrifically mangled). He didn’t.

And the commercial ended with this guy saying “and that’s what allows YOU to buy her a beer.” (or something along those lines) How classy - this all American beer was positioning itself as this sort of domestic Stella Artois. Wait doesn’t that tread on Bud Select’s territory? Anheiser-Busch - schizo advertising.

Is Rob Riggle, the spokesman, who’s also appeared in both SNL and The Daily Show, trying to be serious and therefore funny? Well it’s a shame because he comes off as nothing short of the asshole who looks down at someone cause of the brand of beer they’re drinking. Despite all the phrases Rob was spouting, I wanted someone just to say, ‘it’s umm just budweiser.’

The commercial wasn’t informative, entertaining or funny - I can’t imagine a human being whom after viewing that commercial having anything but utter contempt for every aspect of this ad.

AdFreak claimed Budweiser had political motives behind this commercial. Are their copywriters really that smart? Maybe that cleverness might just make me forget about this talking head moron.

Well Budweiser, if you’re going to make me choose between drinking the beer of a pretentious asshole or the beer of the man who can use a single word and express an array of emotions (the ‘dude’ commercials). I’m drinking bud light - cause when I’m in the mood for drinking urine less calories just makes sense to me.

(maybe I’m wrong - is there anyone out there that actually likes this commercial? please comment and tell me.)

the poughkeepsie tapes LEAKED POSTER (a wannabe horror cloverfield)

January 26th, 2008 · 1212 Comments

poughkeepsie leaked poster

if cloverfield was the definitive monster movie of the newly emerging amateur video genre… the poughkeepsie tapes coming out sometime this year is trying to be that horror movie. or its marketing is struggling to make it that way.

for those of you who don’t remember my cloverfield post - shame on you - but i told you so. strange that simply one week after cloverfield opened… poughkeepsie tapes is now being slowly spattered onto the web.. the trailer, posters etc etc of a movie that actually premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

the movie in a nutshell (no spoilers) a bunch of VHS tapes are found (for some very odd reason the footage is film quality…) in an abandoned house and contains hours of a serial killer documenting his process/murders in the first person. i suppose it has been a while since the last time hollywood pumped out a torture porn..(Hostel, Saw, Captivity) never mind untraceable just came out didnt it..(at least diane lane is still hot)

i’ll buy the cloverfield concept of friends documenting a monster in NYC… but a serial killer who’s holding up a Handicam while chasing and killing his victims? c’mon. seriously? he can actually run down victims while staring at the 3 inch screen?! this guy shouldn’t be a serial killer.. he needs to be a cinematographer or at the very least a steadicam operator!

as you can see in the leaked poughkeepsie tapes poster above - the killer wears a very creepy mask - dont know why maybe out of camera shyness?

to lend credibility and add realism to the film, the film actually casted members of the poughkeepsie local news channel to broadcast some fake reports. i wonder how those anchors’ careers are now - like if they can bullshit for a torture porn horror movie - how easy is it for them to lie when they’re on air broadcasting ‘real’ news?

keep your eyes out on this one folks - and watch how this movie will undoubtedly tank despite entirely copying cloverfield in both concept and marketing.
