A Smaller Bang - But Still Something from Nothing

January 18th, 2008 · 596 Comments

Don’t get me wrong…I’m a product of the popular culture that bred me. I still use my Ninja Turtles towel at the somehow still immature age of 23. I still have a promotional t-shirt from the release of Donkey Kong Country (I had to replace the first one because I wore it until it dissolved in high school). I still watch reruns of old TGIF shows like Full House and Boy Meets World, even if I can recite most of the lines and could pen a veritable Aesop’s Fables based solely on life lessons I learned from 1990’s family programming. Looking back, it may not have been the most creative influence and it was a bit predictable, but it was pure…at least that’s how I like to remember it…

But all the pieces of popular culture I remember growing up (no matter how cheesy) can’t salvage the fact that there’s filth coming at us from all angles and it has been for a long while: TV shows that sell creativity down the river in favor of the lowest common denominator, abandoning their artistic vision for more money. Car companies and burger joints ruining classic songs by branding them into oblivion (no, not This is Our Country by John Mellencamp…he ruined that himself). The media scrutinizing every aspect of anyone running for office until we hate every candidate and rely on them to pick for us. Celebrities somehow replacing real news in the papers and on TV when journalists choose the easy write over something interesting or hard-hitting.

Where did the creativity go? The drive? The uniqueness? The major contributors to our culture today have become low-brow, predictable, and unwilling to take risks and stand out - high-quality innovators are now the minority. And we’ve let it happen…through our complacency, we’ve managed to make these purveyors of poor publicity and product Gods of what were exposed to on a daily basis. We need to start holding them accountable for what they’ve been flinging at us lately…

It’s time to change things…

it’s time we stole back the fire for the common man…

and this is our first step…
