Commercial Review: VW Jetta RPM Baby Sleep

In a word: Disappointing.

You’ve all seen the recent Jetta commercial right? The one where the baby, seated safely in the back seat, is sleeping soundly, as his father is cruising the city streets in the middle of the night (probably looking for his baby’s mama, a hooker most likely). This baby cutely wakes up and cries each time the Jetta’s RPMs drop - his father makes the correlation immediately and begins speeding and running red lights and the baby falls immediately back into a gentle slumber.

Okay, I buy it so far. It’s ‘cute.’ I didn’t know the target audience was the parent demo - but he was young, late 20’s - all good and fine - appropriate for the football timeslot I guess. I wait patiently for my favorite jetta “moment” and then commercial ends. What the hell?! That was it?? Are you kidding me? What moment am I talking about? Please watch the video below.. and resume reading.

Safe happens. You DAMN right it does! What happened to that ad campaign?! Is there a rule that you can’t show babies and their drunk reckless speeding fathers get into car accidents?! It just comes to a shock to me that Crispin would encourage infantile appeasement over safe driving. Moral: drive a fully loaded baby in backseat Jetta, and traffic laws need not apply.

Who are the victims here? Simple. It was that Jetta full of minorities (and one white dude) who were driving safely home discussing a movie. They’ll probably never get to finish that discussion. Poor bastards.
