I’m Already Sick of “Jumper”

January 25th, 2008 · 1856 Comments

The damn movie isn’t out yet, but the ad campaign is so aggressive I’m already sick of the freakin’ thing. Apparently the premise is there are people who can teleport themselves from place to place because of some genetic abnormality. There are people who can jump and people who hate jumpers. They want the jumpers dead…know what that sounds like? Hate crime!

The movie is one of two things: either an over-advertised action movie that has little to no plot to it or it’s some kind of deep social commentary on discrimination and violence towards people different from you. Let’s address both, shall we?

Over-advertised Action Movie

So you can jump, eh? Bet you can’t jump into an array of cross-promotional situations and slowly sell your movie out before it even hits theaters…

OK, I guess you can. Seriously, I’ve seen Jumper plastered all over:

- Traditional Ads (television, internet)

- NFL Games (in the “Jumper” instant replay segments)

- Video Games

- Fox Sports columns (clearly written as a means to promote the movie)

- Massive trailer ads

Tonight, while seeing X-Games footage in a pub, I noticed that the “height meter” used for the first jump in the Ski Half-Pipe was the “Jumper” meter (I’ll post video/picture once it’s online). For the love of God, this thing is inescapable.

Unfortunately, the fact of the matter is the movie premise doesn’t sound that original or exciting. It’s probably a lot of production and money for a pretty terrible plot. Now I can’t say it’s an awful movie before seeing it, but…

Wait, yes I can. Jumper probably sucks! Stop flooding the market with it because it’s going to flop, you’ll be out a ton of money, and you’ll have to start selling yourself to fund your eventual drug addiction. Look what you did, you little jerk!

Aside: Did you know Eminem apparently was offered the lead role? Yeah, it’s THAT good of a movie apparently…he turned it down, too…

Deeper Meaning

Hmm, perhaps it’s a social commentary on the digital age and how we’re all able to “jump” around the world, both through our communication with others and through information…

Or maybe the “Jumper” gene being hated by some is a discussion of how groups of people have dealt with prejudice and hate and had to overcome it to benefit society…

Or it could be that its a message that you cannot use special power without impacting others and those against the “Jumpers” are right…

But want to know what the true meaning of Jumper is?

There is none. Stop trying to over-analyze things. Jumper is going to suck…get over it and save your money…
